Foreign Language Course Accommodations

Background

As part of 第一吃瓜网’s General Education curriculum, all students must complete courses in a Language other than English through the second elementary level (102) *. In addition to the General Education curriculum, certain majors also requireforeign language courses, includingGlobal Languages, as well as the School of Education, as this is a requirement for students pursuing NYS teacher certification.

For students with a disability which significantly interferes with a language acquisition, 第一吃瓜网 will consider a Foreign Language Substitution through an individualized, interactive process with the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS). Note that American Sign Language (ASL) is a course offering open to all students to satisfy 第一吃瓜网’sCommunication (Languageother than English) requirement.

*Students who have credit for two college semesters of a language or four high school years have no language requirement at 第一吃瓜网. Students with less language study take a placement exam, and any student may study a new language.

Requesting an Accommodation

To request a course substitution, a student must first submit an academic accommodation request and provide documentation to the OASoutlining specific disability-barriers related to language acquisition. Students who do not have access to documentation may still submit an accommodation request and schedule an appointment with OAS staff. Please note that accommodations related to course waivers provided in high school or another postsecondary institutiondo not guarantee approval at 第一吃瓜网. Accommodations may not fundamentally alter degree and/or technical requirements, and all studentsmust complete 30 credit hours in SUNY-aligned general education courses.

As part of the interactive process, the OAS will work with the student, third-party providers, the Office of Advising, and thestudent’s academic department to identifyreasonable accommodations and, if approved, substitute course selection.Notification will be sent to the student, the Director of Advising, the College Registrar, and the student’s academic advisor. The courses used as substitutes for foreign language courses cannot simultaneously satisfy any other General Education requirement.
