2024-25
The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) Innovation Grant Award 2025 provided critical support for the development of a new international education initiative designed to expand students™ global learning experiences through a study abroad program in Kenya. The grant funds were used to purchase airfare for a reconnaissance trip to Kenya during Summer 2025 in preparation for the program™s planned launch in Summer 2027.
My motivation for applying for the TLC Innovation Grant stemmed from the program™s emphasis on supporting innovative teaching and learning initiatives. At the time of application, the study abroad program had already received institutional approval for Summer 2027. I viewed the opportunity as a unique and impactful initiative that would enrich students™ international and intercultural learning experiences through direct engagement with educational institutions, local organizations, and communities in Kenya. The grant provided the necessary support to conduct preliminary planning and establish the partnerships required for a successful program.
The reconnaissance trip was highly productive and instrumental in advancing the program. During my visit, I connected with a program collaborator and engaged with local organizations and educational institutions to discuss potential partnerships, student activities, and logistical planning. These meetings provided valuable insight into program development and helped establish the foundation for meaningful academic and cultural experiences for participating students.
The grant activity has significantly impacted my instructional and program development efforts. Since returning from Kenya, I have developed the program agenda, designed the course structure, and initiated recruitment for the Summer 2027 program. The firsthand experiences and partnerships established during the trip have strengthened the academic quality and authenticity of the program content. In addition, the experience has enhanced my ability to integrate global perspectives and experiential learning opportunities into my teaching.
Student response to the program has been highly positive. Although the program has not yet been implemented, students have expressed considerable enthusiasm about the opportunity to study in Kenya, a destination many view as both unique and culturally significant. Interest in the program has already translated into strong early recruitment, with eight students currently in the process of applying to participate in the Summer 2027 experience.
Overall, the TLC Innovation Grant has been essential in transforming an approved concept into a well-developed international education initiative. The support provided through the grant enabled critical planning activities, strengthened international partnerships, and laid the groundwork for a high-impact global learning experience for students.
